Device Selection in the ICU

The participant will be able to:

• Review current evidence that applies to devise selection in acute patients
• Consider factors specific to the critically ill patient population
• Identify proper device selection based on the patient’s needs
• Understand the importance of ongoing assessment post device insertion

Topic #2:
Risk Associated with Gel for Ultrasound-Guided PIV Insertion

Speaker # 2:  
Nancy L. Moureau, RN BSN, Ph.D., CRNI, CPUI, VA-BC

Objectives:

The participant will be able to:

• Discuss issues surrounding risk of contamination with UGPIV insertions
• Identify evidence of contamination from gel, skin and probe
• Evaluate probe cover failure avoidance measures
• Describe specific steps to reduce risk and cost that lead to greater safety
